Okay, after the 'pigeon' interlude, we'll continue practising with collocation. Remember, (better) collocation is mentioned in the public version of the IELTS Band Descriptors in Band Score 7 and 8. This is important.

Here we go again, continuing with the collocation. Collocation, or more specifically, bad collocation, is one reason people cannot achieve IELTS 7 or 8. It's certainly something to work on, and here is the next set of sentences for you to look at.

In the last two posts, I mentioned that the claim that the school or teacher ‘uses original IELTS material’ should immediately make you uneasy. I mentioned how test material is not learning material, and the danger is that this ‘test material’ will be used for memorising answers, either spoken or written. This therefore leads to the issue of memorisation. So, let’s think of the IELTS Speaking Test, and the …

In this culture, every one wants to focus on 'tests', and it is a common belief that to prepare for a test, you need to just practice them, and use them, and keep practicing them and using them. The IELTS test is like exercise; just keep using them and you'll get strong. Hmmmm, in this post, I’ll look at the …

Sometimes a dubious but popular IELTS source give a phrases for IELTS Writing, and suddenly it becomes popular – but that doesn’t mean it’s good. Usually it isn’t, because the phrase is simple given for memorization, and all words come with meaning which must be appropriate to the situation, and the ‘instant IELTS experts’ don’t, or can’t, think this deeply.

Sometimes a student will ring, and say, “Can you guarantee an IELTS 7?” Our response is, “No one can guarantee that”, and then the phone sometimes goes ‘click …. buzzzzzzzz …”. In the previous post, I stated, strongly, that in IELTS, it is impossible to guarantee anything, and anyone who does so is misleading you. Let’s continue to look at the …
