Logical Writing in IELTS Writing Task Two (5 of 10)

Well, here we go with the next of the IELTS ‘logic’ posts. Remember, in IELTS essays, one of the biggest problems is a lack of logical thinking, especially if you memorise material from the many IELTS ‘magic books’ out there.

Always remember, IELTS Task-Two essays require a detailed and coherent argument. It must make sense! You need to have the ability to know what makes sense and what does not. Here are five more sentences, but each one has a logic issue. Can you see what it is?

Try to work out the logic problems with the following sentences.

1. As the cost of living soars, it becomes more difficult for people to live.
2. This will cause social effects in the economy and development.
3. Politicians can provide nannies to look after children.
4. Managing a prison is costly. To be specific, government has more important concerns.
5. Managing a prison is costly. To be specific, it takes a lot of money to feed prisoners.

Answers to Logic (4 of 10)

1. Smoking has no effect on sad people. Perhaps it could affect stressed or nervous people.
2. Giving people the death penalty means they are dead! Yes, this will stop them. Dead people usually don’t commit crimes, right? Does the writer really need to tell us this.
3. ‘Most’ crimes? Actually, a crime by definition is an intentional act. Therefore, all crimes are on purpose. If it is not on purpose, it is an ‘accident’, not a crime.
4. Hmmmm. The development of technology has nothing to do with the need for energy. Perhaps the writer means ‘development of industry’.
5. ‘Costly’ is an extreme adjective. ‘Considerably’ is a moderating adjective. These words can’t go together. Can you be ‘considerably wonderful’?
