Logic (5 of 10)

One of the biggest problems in IELTS essays is a lack of logic. IELTS writing needs to be detailed and accurate, and you have to hit the target, dead centre, to get a high IELTS mark (hence the picture). So, let’s start thinking everyone.

Try to work out the logical problems with the following sentences. The answers will be given and explained in the next post.

  1. The most apparent problem is the future care of the elderly.
  2. There are many different genders in the world.
  3. Co-education outweighs single-gender school.
  4. Surprisingly, the other four items are less than 10%.
  5. Capital punishment deters people, especially those who want to commit crimes.

Answers to Logic 4 of 10

Here are the answers to the previous post.

I will give the original illogical sentence, then my comments.

  1. We only have one earth nowadays.

Actually, we only had one earth in the past, as well. In fact, we have always had one earth. Cross out the word ‘nowadays’ to make this sentence logical.

  1. There are many civil wars happening in Syria.

Actually, there is only one civil war in this country. Maybe we could say ‘much fighting’ or ‘many violent fights’.

  1. Since scientists invented electricity, energy has become important.

Actually, energy was always important, even 100,000 years ago, when fire was used to cook food.

  1. Undoubtedly, it might be hard.

‘Undoubtedly’ means 100%; ‘might’ means 50%. You can’t logically combine  these together.

  1. Guns can cause intentional accidents.

If something is an accident, then it can’t be intentional. Take out the word ‘intentional’.
