The instructions In the IELTS Writing Test ask you to 'give examples from your own knowledge and experience'. To do this, 'such as' is often used, but it is often used wrongly. So, we need to look at this phrase carefully. Here is the first of five ‘such as’ issues (from my IELTS Writing Task Two book [Tip 19, Item 3] - see picture below).

What is wrong with the following sentences?

  1. Cars cause problems, such as they block the central city streets.
  2. This causes great inconvenience, such as people can’t go to work.
  3. This is made worse by other factors, such as they don’t know about guns.

Let’s Think About It.

After ‘such as’ we almost always use a noun, often an ‘ing’ gerund, although a formal noun (as in Sentence 3, which follows), if possible, is often better. The sentences should be written:

  1. Cars cause problems, such as blocking the central city streets.
  2. This causes great inconvenience, such as stopping people going to work.
  3. This is made worse by other factors, such as their unfamiliarity with guns

Time to Practice

Now fix the following sentences.

  1. There are many problems, such as young girls become pregnant.
  2. This causes pressure, such as students need to study harder.
  3. The effects will be significant, such as more typhoons will happen.
  4. They have to overcome many obstacles, such as they don’t have skills.
  5. Workers worry about many things, such as they don’t have jobs.
  6. New employees learn skills, such as they know about customers.
  7. The biggest effects are environmental, such as the forests are cut down.
  8. War creates horrible scenes, such as many people die.
